Sitting in the back of a…theater

After months of anticipation, I finally got to see the Big Star documentary, Nothing Can Hurt Me at the Indie Memphis Film Festival and as a special added bonus Jody Stephens was in attendance. I guess that is just one of the perks of living in Memphis.

The Big Star story itself is the stuff great movies are made of; unparalleled talent, one-of-a-kind characters, heart-breaking disappointment and countless tales of loss and love. And I don’t think I even need to mention the soundtrack. Hearing the songs in a theater was like hearing them for the first time, especially when played in context of their story. “You and Your Sister” was particularly moving hearing Chris Bell and Alex Chilton’s harmonies.

The story is not a happy one and yet, there is a sense of hope that comes from the fact that their music continues to gain more fans and inspire new generations of musicians. Whether you are a massive fan who thinks they’ve seen and heard it all or you are a Big Star novice, you will not be disappointed.
